Mi-Del FAQ's

Q – How can the MI-DEL Gluten-Free Cookies be considered gluten-free when the package label states that the product is processed in a facility that handles wheat? Is this product safe for a person with Celiac Disease?
A – Yes, MI-DEL Gluten-Free Cookies are safe for a person with Celiac Disease. The bakery that makes MI-DEL Gluten-Free Cookies adheres to the Codex Alimentarius standard – the international gluten-free food standard for manufacturers.
The current Codex gluten-free standard specifies a gluten limit of 200 parts per million (ppm). MI-DEL Gluten-Free products consistently fall well below 200 ppm. In fact, MI-DEL gluten-free products consistently test below twenty (20) ppm.
Utilizing ELISA methodology, product samples are tested at the beginning, middle, and end of each production run. Every batch of gluten-free flour blend is also tested prior
to mixing.

Q – Are MI-DEL Gluten-Free Cookies caseine free?
A – The following items are caseine free:
Gluten-Free Ginger Snaps
Gluten-Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
Gluten-Free Vanilla Sandwich Cookies
Gluten-Free Double Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
Gluten-Free Chocolate Mint Sandwich Cookies

Q – Where does the natural flavor come from in MI-DEL Cookies? Could it contain gluten?
A - The natural flavors in the MI-DEL Cookies are a proprietary blend and are therefore confidential. However, we will address any specific concern. For the Gluten-Free cookies, of course the natural flavors are also Gluten-Free.

Q – Why do MI-DEL Whole Wheat Graham Crackers look different?
A – To ensure consistent baking quality, MI-DEL Honey Grahams are now made on a new production line. The cracker shape is different (it used to be a rectangular shape and is now a square) but we use the exact same recipe.

Q – Are there plans to eliminate high fructose corn syrup from MI-DEL
Sandwich Cookies?
A – Yes, high fructose corn syrup has been eliminated from MI-DEL Sandwich Cookies (and it was never an ingredient in the other MI-DEL Cookies).

Q – My child has a nut allergy and recently your label changed to say nuts are in the factory. Can you explain the risk if she should eat one of your cookies?
A – The production process for MI-DEL Cookies has not changed. The cookies are made the same way as they were before the allergen warning was added to the package; we made the label change simply to help clarify the fact that some nut products are made in the bakery.
Only Pecans are run on the MI-DEL line of bagged cookies. Peanut Butter Cremes are sometimes produced on the same line that makes the MI-DEL Sandwich Cookies but strict sanitation/allergen procedures are in place to avoid any potential contamination. Ultimately, you are the best judge of your child’s sensitivity to allergens; we just want to provide as much information as we can to help you make an informed decision.

Q – Do MI-DEL Gluten-Free sandwich cookies contain dairy?
A – No, MI-DEL Gluten-Free Sandwich Cookies do not contain any dairy.

Q – My child is allergic to milk and milk products. The Ginger Snaps seem to be completely milk free so why is there a Kosher/Dairy symbol on the package?
A – The Kosher certification reflects the fact that the bakery does produce other products that contain dairy. Please note that a strict sanitation procedure is followed between each allergen run.

Q – What does "MI-DEL" stands for?  What is its significance?
A – MI-DEL Cookies were named after the wife of Samuel Midel who created the cookies. Please click on our Brand History section to learn more about the
MI-DEL name.

Q – My child has a corn allergy. Is there corn in MI-DEL Cookies?
A – MI-DEL Cookies do not contain corn, except for the MI-DEL Gluten-Free cookies.

Q – Are MI-DEL Snaps supposed to be very hard?
A – Yes, old-fashioned, Swedish style MI-DEL Snaps are formulated to have a very crunchy bite.

Q – Why are MI-DEL Cookies sometimes crumbly instead of crisp? Sometimes the cookies taste soft and then fall apart in your mouth and sometimes the texture of the cookies is hard. Why? Why are the cookies inconsistent from bag to bag?
A – MI-DEL cookies are made with natural/organic flour. Although our goal is to maintain a constant taste and texture, the natural/organic flour can present texture variations from one batch to the next.

Q – Why do the bags occasionally break or leak crumbs?
A – MI-DEL Cookies are packaged in old fashioned bags, not unlike bakery bags or brown paper bags; they are designed to protect our cookies and keep them fresh while trying to avoid excess packaging. Although we take all precautions to ensure a tight seal on the bottom of the bag, crumbs sometimes seep out.
